Documented in a Court periodical dated Oct. 2005, in an article written by Susan J. Levy, illustrates the importance of the court tours for our children and their parents, she writes:
‘One of the most remembered stops of the tours in New York is a visit to the pens. Of course, this is not a stop that is made with every group that comes in, but those that do, come away with a definite impression made.
Many kids have said it was the best part of their day, even though they may have been nervous at first.
This is thanks to Captain Al Bonilla, the Corrections Captain in charge of 111 Centre Street. Captain Bonilla, who does a lot of work with kids on the outside, doesn’t speak so much about the correction system. He talks about the things that kids need to stay out of the system: vision and self-respect. And believe me, when they sit inside the cells and the gates close, he has their full attention. Captain Bonilla feels that if kids can keep their focus and not lose their dreams, they will not succumb to peer pressure. This experience is great not only for the kids, but for the teachers and parents that accompany them.’
